After seemingly endless demolition, building, excavation and cleanup work, the Galeries Lafayette put the first spot of color to the old and new shopping mile Friedrichsstrasse. The light, elegant glass temple designed by architect Jean Nouvel, so very different from the usual Berlin block construction, has become a major public attraction.
Galeries Lafayette in Berlin is a branch of the luxurious Parisian department store and is located in the City East at Friedrichstraße corner Französische Straße. Galeries Lafayette is highly visible: Its modern glass facade distinguishes it from the other buildings around and provides an international shopping atmosphere.
From the beginning on Galeries Lafayette focussed on high-fashion clothing, especially from France but also from international brands. To highlight its reputation Galeries Lafayette established “Labo Mode”, a stage for young fashion designers inside the department store where they can present and sell their clothes.
Besides clothings Galeries Lafayette also provides a large array of international beauty products. Furthermore it awaits customers with a gourmet department in the basement. The several shops and restaurants focus on delicacies from France such as the famous pastry macarons but also fine wines and cheeses. Next to the gourmet department visitors find the “Librairie Francaise”, a bookshop with only books in French language.
